Bell Miner

This colonial honeyeater endemic to southeastern Australia is also colloquially known as the Bellbird. They get their common name because they feed almost exclusively on the dome-like coverings of jumping plant lice, that feed on sap from eucalyptus leaves.

Bell Miners are aggressive birds that defend their colony areas communally, excluding most other insectivorous birds.

Their calls include an amazing 'ping' sound.

This bird was photographed in central Melbourne by Theonie Anastassiadis.
