This site is for the adventure lover who is into exploring an underwatched urban birding spot. Urban Birder Bob Shanman tells about his efforts to watch Polliwog Park for a year.
The Ballona Wetlands is an excellent spot for the chance of finding some rare urban residents including the White-winged Kite and Loggerhead Shrike. It was the site's abundant wildlife that recently saved it from redevelopment by Steven Spielberg (who apparently prefers his birds to be able to act!).
For those who would rather not stray too far from the Sunset Strip, Franklin Canyon is a mere diamond crusted necklace throw from Beverly Hills and the perfect location for picnics, hiking and birding within it's scenic acres of woodland and lakes. Expect to see the Californian endemic Nuttall's Woodpecker and plentiful Red-tailed Hawks.
